Disarming Design

2017

Short documentaries of three products from the alternative design label Disarming Design, created during my internship in Palestine.

Founded by Belgium-based teacher and designer Annelys de Vet, Disarming Design shares deeply personal stories of being Palestinian through practical design.

Straway shows the daily struggle of Palestinians when travelling between different locations from the West Bank to Israel. Checkpoints and roadblocks limit mobility and cause major time delays, which have been visualised in the handblown glass straws. Designed by Ayat Bader & Florian Mecklenburg.

Throughout Palestine, the smell of wild thyme is omnipresent. This jar of ‘Spiced Landscapes’ is a tribute to the rolling Palestinian hills where the wild za’atar grows, and the people who pick it.

Designed by Arthur Röing Baer & Mohammad Banat.

The Poetic Nights pillowcases combine calligraphy, fabric design and poetry by Mahmoud Darwish. The cotton fabric is made in Hebron, screen printed by Ayed Arafah who also made the design, and tailored in Bethlehem.
