More drones, more war

Writing - 2020

This op-ed in the NRC, written in collaboration with Dr. Lauren Gould and the Intimacies of Remote Warfare research team, critically examines the claim that deploying more drones will improve intelligence and reduce civilian deaths in conflict. Drawing on past U.S. drone warfare experiences, the op-ed argues that more data does not equate to better understanding of complex local contexts. Rather, it suggests that increased drone usage perpetuates the illusion of a "clean" war while intensifying violence and civilian suffering. The authors urge policymakers and the public to question the reliance on technology in remote warfare and its potential to escalate conflict, as evidenced by the Hawija tragedy.
